Nutritional Ketosis - Optimize Your Mitochondrial Metabolism

D. S. McGerk | January/2017

Topic: Nutritional Ketosis - Optimize your Mitochondrial Metabolism.

We're now starting to realize that mitochondrial dysfunction is at the core of virtually all diseases, and support for nutritional ketosis is growing by leaps and bounds. 2016 was a breakthrough year for this kind of information.

for Ketogenic Therapies was founded in 1994 to provide information about diet therapies for people with epilepsy, other neurological disorders and select cancers. They use all available approaches to therapies and with ketosis therapy they are achieving 10-25% seisure free with their patients.

One of the reasons it works so well is because it drives your inflammation - aka insulin resistance - aka metabolic syndrome down to very low levels. When inflammation disappears, your body can heal.

Optimize your Mitochondrial Metabolism

Nutritional Ketosis is when our metabolism runs off of energy that comes from our reserved fat instead of glucose. We are just beginning to understand the biological intricacies of aging. A growing body of research is challenging the belief that aging is beyond your control, prompting scientific research ... In a report published in the August 2013 issue of Cell Reports, (6) scientists discovered that the "mTOR gene" is a significant regulator of the aging process ..." (5).

Emerging evidence indicates that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease involving disturbances in energy production through respiration and fermentation. Cancer: A Metabolic Disease With Metabolic Solutions | Dr. Thomas Seyfried | march/2015. (10,10a) .

Burning glucose, an inherently "dirty" fuel as it generates far more reactive oxygen species (ROS) than fat and ketones. But in order to burn ketones, the cell must be healthy and normal. Cancer cells cannot burn fat, and this is the heart of successful cancer treatment, and why ketogenic diets appear to be so effective. They essentially starve the cancer, while nourishing healthy cells.

Ketosis is not Ketoacidosis

Ketosis ≠ Ketoacidosis - Ketones are Fuel

Ketoacidosis (aka Diabetic Ketosis - DKA) is a life-threatening condition in which your body doesn’t make enough insulin. This can cause you to have dangerously high levels of ketones and blood sugar. This combination makes your blood too acidic, which can change the normal functioning of internal organs like your liver and kidneys. If you don’t get prompt treatment for it, you could go into a coma or die.

This was first discovered in the Urine of Type I diabetics. A high level of Ketones were measured in the urine indicating that the body was not processing carbohydrates. Poor diabetes management is a leading trigger for DKA. But today, we know that Type II diabetes can be over come or controlled with a LCHF diet. Avoiding MetS - Metabolic Syndrome is a key issure with lifestyle. Ref: Addictions ... the Obesogenic Diet.

longevity and carbohydrates on shorter lifespan Ketosis is a normal state of metabolism, whereby, our bodies move in and out of Fat Burning mode. If you have ketosis, you have a higher than usual level of ketones in your blood or urine. Ketones are a chemical your body produces when it burns stored fat.

Ketones are a more efficient energy fuel for our metabolism. A low carbohydrate diet can trigger ketosis. That is because a low-carb diet will cause you to have less glucose in your blood, which will, in turn, cause you to produce less insulin. Your body will begin to burn fat for energy instead of relying on sugars. Ref: Carbohydrates and Longevity | contributor october/2016.

The Pyramid indicates that in both cases of either Ketosis or Ketoacidosis the body's first line of defense is Low Carbohydrates. Low carbs promote the body's optimum metabolism and an example of this was published in 1996 by S. G. Hasselbalch, et.al., in the American Journal of Physiology ...
A ketogenic state results in a substantial (39%) increase in cerebral blood flow, and appears to reduce cognitive dysfunction associated with systemic hypoglycemia in normal humans. (30)

  1. Longevity and the triage theory of nutrients The discovery of the vitamins was a major scientific achievement in our understanding of health and disease. In 1912, Casimir Funk originally coined the term “vitamines” from the Latin vitals (vitally important) and amines (organic derivatives of ammonia). The major period of discovery began in the early nineteenth century and ended at the mid-twentieth century. (21) The puzzle of each vitamin was solved through the work and contributions of epidemiologists, physicians, physiologists, and chemists. We all know the discover of the cure to Scurvy, and Vitamin C, also, beriber (B1), (21a) rickets, pellagra (B3), and xerophthalmia as specific vitamin deficiencies. Many Nobel Prizes came out of the research on vitamins, there discovery, isolation, synthesis and structure. (21b)

The modern diet is referred to as "The Obesogenic Diet" a term created by Dr. Rhonda Patrick. The Centenarian diet uses the Asian approach to these protein sources. Meat and seafood are not the primary entree, but used as an accoutrement or feasting. We eat too much protein and this is very hard on the kidneys. Medical data shows we only need about 1/3 what we eat today.
