... Precision medicine - tailoring drugs and therapies to a person’s genetic profile - has been touted in recent years as a way to maximize the benefits of treatment while minimizing side effects. Experts are now wondering if personalizing an individual’s diet according to their DNA profile - called precision nutrition - can also improve health ... says Dr. Hu.

In a 2015 study by researchers in Israel, the researchers analyzed data from 800 study participants - including data on gut microbiota, which play a key role in diet and health - and developed an algorithm that predicts how much an individual’s blood glucose level might increase after a particular meal. The results showed that a dietary intervention based on the algorithm helped participants significantly lower their typical post-meal blood sugar spikes. (1,2)

Dietary intake is a central determinant of blood glucose levels, and thus, in order to achieve normal glucose levels it is imperative to make food choices that induce normal postprandial (post-meal) glycemic responses (PPGR; Gallwitz, 2009 - Diabetes Care). (3)

    Dr. Hu points out some of the implications of Precision Nutrition. (1,2)

  1. Personalized diets to smooth blood sugar spikes showed positive and an algorithm to describe this was created.
  2. Beverages, epidemiological studies have suggested that coffee is beneficial to health outcomes like type 2 diabetes; more recently, genetic analyses have shed light on the biology behind coffee’s health effects.

Microbiota and obesity - Fecal matter transplanting, studies show that with two mice populations, transplanting from an obese human into a group of lean mice - the mice that got the transplant from the obese human became obese. The other mouse group stayed lean. “This suggests that gut microbiota may play an independent role in obesity,” ... Hu said.   5. Metabolite signatures of diet - Scientists are also using sophisticated analytical techniques to learn more about metabolites - small molecules that are products of metabolic reactions in cells. The analytic techniques are known as “metabolomics”; a person’s “metabolome” is the entirety of metabolites in his or her body. Some studies have shown that certain foods and certain diets have unique metabolic signatures, and researchers are beginning to assess the relationship between these signatures and diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The problem with some of Dr. Hu's conslusions, is that, they have been known for the last 5 years. For example, fecal tranplanting reasearch is part of the gut microbiota which accounts for an estimated 80% of our immune system activity.

Conclusion:

Soon we'll cure diseases with a cell, not a pill

  1. Personalized Nutrition - will allow each individual to make better decisions. It is a question of learning and training. Individuals still have to believe enough to change eating habits. Industrialized food manufactures will have to accept the inevitable.
  2. Personalized Medicine - will be based on an understanding of genetic traits, our inherited epigenetics, and the metabolic pathways that allow our sells to live and reproduce successfully.

    The "How" of Preventative Maintenance - the 4 "R's"

  1. Replace - when cells atrophy, we need to insure that the stem cell replacement and cell division mechanisms are funtional, this is an area of extensive research.
  2. Remove - the body's Nutrition Immunity system is an important function of the immune system response that actively kills pathogens, turns on Suicide Genes, rebuilds Telomerase/ALT gene deletion plus stem cell reseeding. Eliminating Death-resistant cells, such as cancers. Clean up junk, such as cardiovascular plaque.
  3. Repair - stiffening of arteries and chemical matrixes that are at damaging. Even "Teeth" as it turns out can be repaired by our own stem cells.
  4. Reinforce - this can be as simple as nutrition but with the SAD at work, we see that this is not simple. Making our cells "Robust" is our aim. Division-obsessed cells like cancers need to be stopped, mitochondrial mutations found and sent to repair.
